UPDATE: Fine Paid! Donations Now Going to CeCe McDonald
Hey everyone,
This is a long overdue update! I launched the website for Queers in the Outdoors on November 21. Just over a month later, on December 24, (my birthday!) I had received enough donations to cover all $1085 of my fines, plus the cost of postage for all the calendars I mailed. I am so grateful to my incredible community who shared the calendar, bought the calendar, gifted the calendar and hung it proudly in their homes.
This experience has been so healing and empowering for me. The state may have tried to tell me that my sexuality is wrong, but my community has reassured me that it is something to be celebrated. And we all get to share in this prideful revenge against the police together!
Since I received (and continue to receive) more money than I needed to cover my own legal fees, I am donating the additional money to two rad causes -
- Hearts on a Wire, a Philadelphia-based organization of trans and gender variant people building a movement for gender self-determination, racial and economic justice, and an end to policing and imprisoning our communities.
&
- Legal fund for CeCe McDonald. CeCe is a young African American trans woman currently being charged with two counts of second degree murder following an incident on June 5th, 2011 when she was attacked outside of a bar. (Read more here!) Her case has drawn international attention and sparked a groundswell of community support.
I am really excited to be able to help support (via all of you) Hearts on a Wire and Cece. In fact, today is a national call-in day to support Cece, so I encourage you all to MAKE SOME CALLS!
So far I have sold sold about 150 calendars and have brought in nearly $300 more than my needed for my own legal fees. Thank you again to EVERYONE to helped share and buy the calendar, for me this is an incredible example of what queer/ally community is capable of.
Much love to you all!!!!
